Description
East Gate is a detached house built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings and a plain clay tiled roof featuring stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan and consists of two storeys with two bays, the easternmost bay being a gabled projection. It has a plinth and ashlar quoins, with casement windows set in chamfered and toothed ashlar surrounds. There is a small bow window in the lower bay and a window in the upper bay set in a gabled dormer. To the right corner of bay one, there is a lean-to timber and tiled porch that protects a boarded door in a chamfered ashlar surround. The interior has not been seen. Immediately south of the house, there is a low stone wall with Ham stone copings, topped with railings featuring cast iron spear points. There is also a matching gate with larger points and scroll braces to the posts. This building is an important element in the setting of the Church of All Saints and the Hanging Chapel.
