Description

The Gateway is a detached house, with deed mentions starting in 1672, but remodelled in the early 19th century. It is built of rendered and colourwashed material, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and featuring red brick chimney stacks. The house is designed in a villa style. The east-facing elevation has two storeys and three bays, with sash windows in plain openings – 12 panes below and 9 panes above. A central pair of glazed doors is protected by a wide, flat-roofed porch with a dentil-moulded fascia, supported by four Doric-style cast-iron columns; the original stone columns are now in the grounds. The south elevation has five bays that mirror the east elevation, with a central projecting section featuring a curved verandah with a bitumenised roof (replacing a previous lead roof), supported by timber columns. This verandah screens French windows set on a curve. Above the verandah is a balcony with a timber lattice balustrade and timber columns, supporting a moulded flat roof, which is believed to have been added around 1805. The interior features doorways, staircases, and coved, moulded ceilings, all dating to the early 19th century. Originally named Meadows, the house was the residence of the Broadmead family, who demolished several tenements to the east of the Hanging Gateway in the early 19th century, likely to expand the grounds, possibly coinciding with the house's remodelling or rebuilding.
