Description

The Old School House and The Beeches are former teachers' houses for the National School, built in 1827. They are constructed from local lias stone rubble with Ham stone dressings and have a plain clay tile roof featuring bracketed eaves and highly ornamented bargeboards on the gable overhangs, along with brick chimney stacks. The buildings are two storeys high.

The east elevation, which is the Old School House, has three bays with a single-storey extension to the north. The second bay projects and has a gabled roof. It features chamfered mullioned two-light windows with four-centre arched lights, framing cast iron lattice casements under square labels. The upper windows in the outer bays are adorned with ornamental gablets. Above the shaped door, which is part-glazed and set in a moulded cambered arched doorway with a square label, is a pointed-arched single-light window.

The west elevation, known as The Beeches, also consists of three bays, with the first bay projecting and featuring an ornamental gable. Below this gable is a three-light mullioned window, with a two-light window above it. The second bay has a single-light window tucked under the eaves, and below it is a moulded cambered archway with a pair of part-glazed shaped doors, sheltered by a timber lean-to porch hood with Welsh slate.

The buildings present seemingly unspoilt examples of the later cottage orné style. The nearby school opened in 1827, closed around 1876, and was demolished by 1903.
