Description
The Market Cross is a 15th-century market cross located on Church Street in Cheddar. The shelter was rebuilt in 1834 and features ashlar stonework with a wood-framed roof. It has a central octagonal pier that is raised on three steps, surrounded by a hexagonal shelter with six arched openings that have four-centred arches. Each angle of the shelter is supported by shallow two-stage buttresses, and it is topped with an embattled parapet. The shaft of the cross is crowned by an abacus that holds figures in niches, which are likely from the late 19th century; however, the cross itself is missing. The structure was rebuilt by Thomas, Marquis of Bath, and it is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, listed as Somerset County No 21.
