Description

The Bridge, comprising numbers 5 to 9, is a terrace built in 1821, situated on the Bridge. The building is three storeys high with a cellar, and is constructed of ashlar, with parapets. Numbers 7 and 8 retain their original cornices. The front has a panelled effect; numbers 7 to 9 retain their panelled piers. There is a trace of a band above the ground floor. Number 5 has been rendered to obscure the original articulation, while number 6 is painted. Each property originally had one window, with glazing bar sashes, except for the second floor of numbers 5 and 6, which have been altered. The ground floors now have modern shop fronts, although number 6 retains a good six-panelled door. Number 7 has a late 19th-century shop front with outer piers and a dentil cornice to the fascia, and the original door, featuring a reeded lintel and an overlight with a diamond-shaped central light for a lantern. Number 8 has a modern shop front with Ionic side columns and a pulvinated frieze with a multi-pane window. Number 9 has a modern shop front, and a return of two windows with a chamfered corner, each with framing panelled pilasters. The roofs are concealed, and are mostly slate.
