Description
Lawford Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with later enlargement in the 18th century. It features roughcast over cob and has a thatched roof that is hipped to the right. There are brick stacks at the left gable end and to the right of the entrance, along with a 20th-century aluminium flue protruding from the ground floor end bay on the right. The layout is likely a three-cell and cross passage plan that has been enlarged to an "L"-plan. The building is one and a half storeys high with two bays, dormer windows, and 20th-century wooden casement windows with three lights. The ground floor has been altered to include three-light leaded casement windows flanking a partially glazed 20th-century door, which is sheltered by a thatched porch supported by wooden uprights. There is a raking buttress on the end bay to the right and a long four-bay return on the right side.
Inside, the farmhouse features a flagstone cross passage and rear passage, with remnants of a square-headed plank and muntin screen that has been renewed with 17th-century panelling to the right. The interior also includes hollow chamfered beads and an empty stair bay to the right of an open fireplace. To the left, there is a modern grate set against the cross passage wall, with very shallow chamfered beads. It is possible that this is an earlier building with a more complex and interesting history, but only the two ground floor rooms were accessible during the survey conducted in July 1983.
