Description
Carew Cottages is a cottage that has been divided, likely built in the late 16th century and enlarged in the early 17th century. It features roughcast over cob and a thatched roof, with brick stacks on the gable end to the left, on the cross wing, and to the right of the entrance to No. 2. The building has a plan that faces the road, with a gabled cross wing and a stair projection on the east side. It is one and a half storeys high, with a layout of 1:2 bays. There is a 2-light casement window in the gable end of the cross wing, two 2-light dormers, and the ground floor of the cross wing is lit by windows on the left and right returns. The left side features a plank door for No. 1, while No. 2 has an inset entrance with a casement window to the right, and No. 3 has a 12-pane sash window in the outer bay right of its entrance, all of which have 20th-century plank doors. Carew Cottages is noted as the best surviving thatched cottage in the parish, presenting a picturesque appearance that highlights the sculptural qualities of cob. The interior has not been viewed.
