Description

Westholme House is a country house built in the mid to late 18th century. It features coursed and squared rubble, predominantly faced with ashlar, and has a hipped slate roof with ashlar stacks that have moulded caps. The building has a symmetrical classical garden front, standing three storeys high with five bays. The ground and first floors have 12-pane sash windows of decreasing height, while the second floor includes 9 and 12-pane sash windows. A notable feature is the Venetian window in the centre of the first floor, which has a centre light with a keystone and a sash window adorned with Gothick tracery, along with moulded cornices for the side lights. The centre of the second floor has a triple light window without additional decoration.

The central door opening features a half-glazed door, framed by a solid ashlar portico with an entablature that includes floral carvings, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course supported by four detached Doric columns that have reeding and acanthus-enriched capitals. The central section of the portico projects forward and includes glazed doors flanked by pilasters, with further pilasters set back on each side. The right side of the house has two large Venetian windows on the ground floor.

At the rear, there are elaborate domestic quarters that are single storey, including a garden-facing section with an attached gazebo that has a pyramidal slate roof, a semi-circular head door opening, a half-glazed door, and semi-circular windows on either side. There is also a hexagonal wooden bellcote with a bell, topped with an ogee-shaped lead roof, situated directly below a large clock.

The interior of Westholme House is particularly rich and executed in the Adam Style. The entrance hall features a well staircase with turned and twisted balusters and a ramped handrail, along with dado panelling and a lantern with plaster decoration and cornices. To the left is a panelled drawing room with a fireplace, and to the right is a dining room that includes a fitted serving table, an adjacent hatch from the hall, a marble fireplace, and a cornice. There is also a circular ante-room with a cornice, a room behind it with an elaborate doorcase and fireplace, and another room with a domed ceiling and a fireplace supported by caryatids. Fireplaces are also present on the first floor.
