Description

The gatepiers, lamp carrier, gates, dwarf wall, and railings fronting the Church of St George date from the mid-19th century. The gatepiers are made of squared and coursed red sandstone, are octagonal in shape, and feature a cavetto moulded cornice, pyramid caps, and a moulded plinth, standing about 1.5 metres high. The lamp carrier is crafted from wrought iron. The dwarf wall is also made of red sandstone, squared and coursed, with a flat coping about 500 mm high, which sweeps up on the north side to about 2 metres. This wall is much eroded and continues beyond the pier as a random rubble wall, transitioning to squared and coursed masonry, with an end section largely obscured by ivy as of November 1983. The railings and gates, dating from the mid-20th century, are made of wrought iron and feature a spade-headed design in the Arts and Crafts style. The double gates are accompanied by railings that return to the west porch of St George's Church, with the railings extending on the south side for about 10 metres to another pier.
