Description

Washer's Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse situated in Fitzhead. It is constructed of rendered random rubble with a steeply pitched slate roof and rendered stacks, including a large external stack at the rear. The original layout comprised three rooms and a cross passage. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has four bays. The first floor has 2- and 3-light casement windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor features a 4-light window. The central left bay contains a four-centred arch doorway with moulded jambs. A projecting 2-storey staircase bay is located on the exterior of the right-hand bay.

Inside, a four-centred arch doorway is present at the rear of the cross passage. To the left is the kitchen, which features a large bressummer beam across the west end, including a chamfered lintel over the fireplace. A round-headed entrance leads to the stair turret on the right, and a cupboard, likely a former bacon smoking chamber, is located on the left. The interior exhibits similarities to Lower Stoford Farmhouse. Notable features include chamfered beams with run-out stops, a spice cupboard built into the south wall, and a hall with moulded beams creating a nine-compartment ceiling, along with a fireplace on the north wall and a built-in cupboard on the south wall with decorative hinges. To the east, the ceiling is divided into four compartments with deep, hollow-chamfered beams and plaster wreaths, some of which were renewed in the 19th century. A blocked staircase bay is visible externally. Washer's Farmhouse represents an unspoiled example of an early 17th-century farmhouse.
