Description
Byams is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and a reroofing in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, with the entrance facade rendered, and features a slate roof. The house has an external stack on the left and additional brick stacks, including a large external stepped stack at the rear. The layout consists of a two-cell side wall fireplace plan, with a staircase turret to the south and a projecting wing to the northeast, forming an L-shape.
The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of bays, with a configuration of one bay, three bays, and one bay. The windows are 20th-century three-light metal casements, with a four-light window to the left of the doorway and a two-light window to the right. A decorative wooden porch from the mid-19th century, with a gabled slate roof, is located at the entrance. The attics are lit from the gable ends, and the staircase turret, which is independently roofed, features a 20-pane window with thick glazing bars.
Inside, the entrance leads directly into a hall that has a hollow chamfered beam and a nine-compartment plaster ceiling, with plaster decoration in two panels to the right of the entrance. To the left is an 18th-century panelled room with bolection moulding, and to the right of the fireplace is an entrance to a dog-leg newel stair, which has plaster friezes and decorated soffits. The staircase turret likely had a second storey that provided access to the attics, which are now accessible via an internal stair.
