Description
The cross in the churchyard of the Church of St James the Great is a 14th-century structure that was restored in 1908. It is made of grey sandstone and has an octagonal plan with two steps. The base features a socket with bold convex broaches, and the square tapering shaft has chamfered edges that are moulded into finials. There is a sculptured figure in a niche on the east side, and the junction with the 1908 restoration is abrupt. The shaft is topped with a lantern, which displays the Virgin and Child on the east face, the Crucifixion on the west face, St James the Great on the north face, and a Bishop on the south face. This cross is also designated as a Scheduled Monument.
