Description

Fitzhead Court and The Manor is a house that has been divided, with its origins likely dating back to the late 16th century. It underwent alterations in the late 17th century and was partially rebuilt and enlarged in the early 19th century. The exterior is rendered over random rubble and features a steeply pitched slate roof with several brick stacks, including one at the gable end of the west wing. The building has a "U"-shaped plan facing south, with service wing additions to the north and the entrance located on the east front.

The house is two storeys high and has an irregular arrangement of windows, with a pattern of 1:4:1 bays. The windows include early 19th-century pointed sashes with Y tracery on the first floor, while the ground floor features a mix of 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-light mullioned and transomed windows. The latter are found in a central, two-bay, flat-roofed single-storey projection. The west wing has windows to the right of a stack with a diagonal buttress, and the east wing has centrally placed windows. The gable end is lit by a lancet window, and a tall brick stack rises from the gabled projection on the left return.

The entrance on the east front is through a Ham stone pointed arch opening, which has a square-headed doorcase with moulded jambs, decorated spandrels, an entablature, and a frieze with brackets that support lanterns. The early 19th-century door features divided tracery batterns and ornamental hinges. Inside, the east wing contains early 19th-century Jacobean-style plaster ceilings, while the western part of the central block showcases fine late 17th-century plaster decoration, including the coat of arms of the Channon family.
