Priory Cottage, Chantry Cottage And Dairy, Abutting South West Corner Of Priory Cottage

Priory Cottage, Chantry Cottage, and the attached dairy are two dwellings and a dairy that were originally part of a college for chantry priests. The buildings date from the 14th century and 16th century, with alterations and enlargements made in the 19th century. They are constructed of roughcast over blue lias rubble and feature a steeply pitched slate roof, with a brick stack at the right gable end and in the center.

The layout includes a hall for the chantry priests' dwelling and a solar to the right, which is now the ruined structure known as the Chantry. There is a gabled two-storey porch, possibly added when the hall was ceiled, and a 19th-century service wing at the rear, with the dairy located in the southwest corner next to the porch. The building is two stories tall with a façade of one bay and four bays. The right gabled projecting two-storey porch has two-light casement windows on the first floor and 19th-century cruciform many-paned windows below. The porch features a segmental leaded opening with a keystone, a rectangular light above a plank door, and a second gabled trellis work porch with a scalloped slate roof and decorative bargeboards, along with a half-glazed door.

The attached dairy has a gabled slate roof and is also roughcast over blue lias rubble, standing two stories tall with one bay. It has a loft door in the gable end accessed by an external flight of stone steps, a ground floor entrance to the left with a plank door, and a pigeon loft opening in the gable end. Although the interior was not viewed, this picturesque group with 19th-century detailing includes a medieval building of significant historical interest.
