Description

Chantry Cottage and Cox's Hill Farmhouse are two houses dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, constructed of rubble stone with stone tiled roofs. The front of the building has two storeys, while the rear has one and a half storeys. The front range, known as Chantry Cottage, dates back to the 15th century and features an octagonal pinnacle chimney at the north end and a wall stack at the south end. The west front has a two-storey, two-window range with small 19th-century casements, including pairs on the first floor and a three-light window on the ground floor, along with a narrow low door that is set to be altered in 1985. At the rear, there is a single window range from the former cross-passage, which includes a south door and a casement window above, with a lean-to on the north side.

Inside, there is a fine moulded Tudor-arched doorway with leaf spandrels at the north end of the cross passage, as well as a small 15th-century fireplace at the north end of the first floor, which has a sloping hood and a three-bay roof with one apparent cruck truss. There are also two deep alcoves in the cross passage. The range continues to the east as Cox's Hill Farmhouse, which features a west end stack on the ridge and an outside rear wall stack with a bread oven. The farmhouse has a three-window range of two-light cyma-moulded recessed mullion windows with hoodmoulds, two dormer gables on the upper floor, and a ground floor window with a door in a stone porch that has a lean-to stone tiled roof and a window to the right. The interior of Cox's Hill Farmhouse has not been inspected.
