Description
West House, formerly known as The Rectory, is a house built between 1806 and 1810 on the site of a 17th-century parsonage. It was altered and extended around 1840 and features a late 19th-century verandah designed by architect George Sale of Dunster. The building is constructed of roughcast over random rubble with a tiled roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and a trick stack on the right.
The house has a double pile service plan with an addition at the rear. It is two stories high with four bays, featuring 16-pane sash windows. The entrance is located in the outer bay on the right, with a fanlight that has divider tracery above a six-panel door with panelled reveals. The five-bay verandah has a hipped tiled roof supported by paired turned columns with decorative spandrels and fretwork balusters set on a plinth, accessible by a flight of six steps at the end bay on the right. There is a two-bay right return and a canted bay on the left return. Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase.
