Description

No 69, with No 67 attached to the rear, is a detached house dating to 1729. The house is built of roughly cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings; the roof is of undulating Welsh slate with high, stepped coped gables, suggesting it may have originally been thatched. It has a brick chimney stack. The house is two storeys high and five bays wide. The ground floor has four-pane sash windows between bays 1 and 2 and bays 4 and 5, with a continuous string course stepping up over the doorway. A circular window was added in the 20th century to the left of bay 3. Above, there are two-light ovolo-mould mullioned windows set within wave-mould recesses with labels. A six-fielded panel door is situated in bay 3, leading up two steps, above which is the datestone inscribed "S/JS/1729". Two straight joints in the lower bays 1 and 2, and 4 and 5, indicate that the fenestration was originally fully regular. The west gable partially collapsed in June 1986; the east gable has a simple attic light. The rear elevation features a blocked two-light mullioned window and a leaded casement. A rear extension, No 67, extends from the north-west corner, consisting of two parts, the end section of which dates to the 19th century. The interior of No 69 has not been inspected. A low ashlar wall with wrought-iron railings, featuring scroll decoration, stands approximately 4 metres in front of the house. The top rail of the railings sweeps up at the corners and at the gateway opposite the door, which features a pair of matching gates hung on iron posts with urn finials, with stone returns to the house.
