Description
Maxdene is an early 19th-century semi-detached house located on the east side of South Street in Castle Cary. It is built of small Cary stone rubble with large stones used as quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof with plain gables and brick chimney stacks arranged in an 'L' shape. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. It features sash windows with 16 panes, set beneath timber lintols; the lower windows are larger. The lower bay to the right of the front has a six-fielded panel door with glazed toplights, set within a plain ashlar surround and sheltered by a simple timber hood supported on brackets. The interior remains unrecorded. A low plinth wall supports simple spiked railings, with a cast-iron gate featuring a Greek key motif on the middle rail and diamond-patterned standards. The railings run for three metres and return directly to the house on the south side, while to the north, a curved wall returns to the house, standing approximately one metre high. These features contribute to the setting of the house and the character of the street. The construction is similar to that of Knowle House, which is attached to the south.
