Description
South Cary House is a detached house, now serving as an old people's home. It was built in the 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension. The structure is made of Cary stone in near-ashlar form, featuring Doulting stone dressings, and has Welsh slate roofs with stepped coped gables on the main block and a plain gable on the extension. A stone chimney stack is present. The house has two storeys with an attic, comprising five bays in the original section and three bays in the extension. The main block features 12-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves, with a small flat-roofed dormer casement window above the third bay. In the lower third bay, there is a 20th-century door within a semi-circular arched surround, complete with a radial glazed fanlight, Doric flanking pilasters, and an open pediment hood supported by corbel brackets. The extension has 16-pane sash windows, which are larger on the lower level, with no window in the lower second bay. The interior has not been seen.
Three metres from the house, there is a Cary stone wall with coping that stands three metres high. This wall runs lower along the length of the house and is topped with spear-point cast-iron railings on a one-metre high wall, featuring a matching gate opposite the door. This wall and railings enhance both the setting of the house and the streetscape.
