Description
Kilve Mill and Water Wheel is an early 18th-century corn mill, with a later 18th-century extension. It was undergoing conversion to a dwelling at the time of a survey in August 1983. The building is constructed of blue lias random rubble, rendered and with a brick corner on the upper floor's right side, and has a slate roof. The plan comprises a left-hand section originally housing milling machinery, extended to the right for storage or possibly as a miller’s dwelling. The mill is three stories high, with three bays. The upper floor has two leaded 18th-century casement windows on the left, an unglazed opening to the right, and all openings are under wooden lintels. The ground floor to the right has a wooden-plank covered opening, while a 19th-century glazed opening is located to the left of the stable door. There is evidence of two blocked windows above, lighting a second storey. A flight of six steps leads to the entrance on the left, with a stable door sheltered by a slate pentice hood supported by wooden brackets. The left return side features an overshot iron waterwheel, likely dating to the late 19th century, without paddles. A butt joint divides the facade, indicating an enlargement of the original building, with one bay on the left and two bays on the right. The interior retains extensive flour milling machinery in the left-hand portion, while the right-hand portion was gutted prior to renovation. The roof structure features collar and principal rafters. Known as Nether Mill to differentiate it from a former fulling mill located a few metres upstream, it ceased operation as a flour mill around 1906.
