Description

Two cottages and an outbuilding, located in Minehead, were constructed in the late 17th or early 18th century. Number 1 was altered and refronted in the mid-19th century. The cottages are built with incised render on the right side of No.1 and painted rubblestone on No.2, both having continuous slate roofs. Brick stacks are present on the right gable end of the outbuilding, the forward slope of the party wall, and the ridge to the left of No.2.

Number 1 has a two-unit plan, and Number 2 a one-unit plan, with each including an outshut. Number 1 has a three-window arrangement on the upper level, while Number 2 has a single-window arrangement. Upper windows are at eaves level. Number 1 exhibits painted stone long-and-short rusticated quoins, with a chamfered corner on the ground floor. The right-of-centre entrance of Number 1 features a 19th-century halved planked door protected by a slate lean-to porch on brackets. Beside the door is a 17th-century four-light mullioned window. A 19th-century three-light window is positioned to the left, with a blank wall suggesting a former open fire. The upper level features 19th-century two- and three-light casement windows with three panes in each leaf. An ovolo-moulded mullioned window and a brick stack are also found in the back outshut.

The interior of Number 1 features stop-chamfered spine beams in both ground-floor rooms. The left room contains a former open fire and an early 18th-century semicircular alcove with fretted shelves. The right room incorporates a spiral staircase to the left of a former open fire. Number 2 has a planked door and a similar porch to Number 1. A 17th-century four-light mullioned window with 20th-century leaded panes is situated above a similar window of three lights, likely 19th-century. The interior of Number 2 was not inspected.

Attached to the left of Number 2, the outbuilding extends approximately 12 meters, featuring a high, shallow segmental arch providing access for carriages, and double planked doors. A rubblestone garden wall, approximately 2 meters high and 20 meters long, curves to enclose the back gardens, and is attached to the rear of Number 1.
