Description
23 and 27 Bampton Street is a cottage dating from the 17th century, restored in 1992, with mid-19th century extensions at the rear and right. It is constructed of cob and rubblestone, topped with a slate roof featuring a rear lateral stack and a brick stack on the left gable end, while the right-hand extension has a pantile roof. The building has a one-unit plan with mid-19th century service and kitchen outshuts at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has a two-window range. The first floor features 19th century two-light windows, while the ground floor has similar 20th century windows and an early 19th century panelled door to the right. At the rear of the left return, which is attached to No. 21, there is a door, and to the right of centre is a small 19th century two-light casement window in the attic. The lower 19th century range has a pantile roof and a 3/3-pane sash window at eaves level above a wide segmental-arched carriage entrance with double planked doors. Inside, the main front room has a chamfered timber lintel over the fireplace, which includes a cloam oven, and features 19th century beams. The left gable wall was rebuilt in the 19th century with a brick end-stack. The roof, dating from the 18th century, has a collar-truss design with trenched purlins. This cottage was likely part of a larger house that included No. 27, originally separated by a wattle and daub partition.
