Description

Bampton House, along with its attached gate piers and gateway, is a house located on Bampton Street in Minehead. It was built in the early 18th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century and again in 1992. The structure is made of rendered rubble and features slate roofs and brick stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a six-window range. The 1992 renovations introduced paired 6/6-pane sash windows, with two on the left and three on the right of the entrance door. The house has rusticated quoins, although these are not visible due to the rendering.

The central pedimented gable from the 19th century includes a tall semicircular-arched window, which has a cast-iron balustrade at the bottom, raised voussoirs, and a mask keystone. To the right, there is a wide segmental-arched carriage entrance featuring a lion's head at the centre and tiled coping, flanked by piers topped with pineapple finials. A late 19th-century oriel window is located on the first floor of the right return.

The interior is currently being modified to accommodate people with disabilities, and the staircase has been removed. Historically, this property is believed to have been part of a lease held by Samuel Hayman from Colonel Francis Luttrell in 1683, which included a description of a substantial tenement with various facilities in Bampton Street.
