Description

Fullands House is a house that now serves as residential accommodation for a school. It was built between 1810 and 1812 on the site of an earlier dwelling for William Russell, which was partly demolished in the late 19th to early 20th century and has undergone internal alterations. The exterior is roughcast over rubble, featuring a moulded cornice and a hipped asbestos slate roof, with a gable end from the demolished wing and brick stacks.

The original plan was T-shaped, with the north wing mostly demolished and a service wing at the west end. The entrance is located on the north front. The east front has three storeys and three bays, with all 16-pane sash windows, except for the 12-pane windows on the first and second floors in the centre, which are obscured by a metal fire escape. The north front also has three storeys and four bays, with the end bay on the left side of the entrance unlit. It features 16-pane sash windows, a 12-pane window above the entrance, and a 20th-century door to the left of the entrance. There is a lead roofed wooden Doric porch with six-panel double doors and a moulded architrave.

The interior has been extensively altered. A reproduction of an early 19th-century engraving in the possession of the occupants shows the canted north wing with a single-storey verandah on the east side. By that time, the property was known as Fullands School, where the future General Gordon of Khartoum was a pupil between 1843 and 1848. It has been noted that "it is not an exaggeration to state that Somerset County Cricket was founded at Fullands," according to Robin Bush. The property was purchased by King's College School in 1946.
