Description

King's College is a large group of Gothic school buildings located on South Road, constructed between 1867 and 1869 by C. E. Giles, with a new chapel added from 1898 to 1903 by W. E. Tower. The main building features a symmetrical front with a central tower that rises above the roof level, flanked by ranges on either side. The main block is three storeys high, built of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a hipped slate roof with gables over the windows on the left and right.

The building includes stringcourses and impost bands, while the central tower boasts an elaborate crocketed cornice and a French chateau-style slate roof topped with a picturesque openwork bell-turret. A recessed pointed panel is located at the front of the tower roof. The tower features a three-light ashlar bay that rises through both storeys above the entrance. The second floor has six windows, each with three lights, set under relieving arches in the gables. The ground and first floor windows are of two lights, adorned with pointed dripmoulds over the first floor. All windows have cusped lights along with stone mullions and transoms.

A very large entrance porch is flanked by square turrets with niches, one of which retains a carved figure on the left. The archway consists of three orders with foliage soffits and nook shafts, leading to double doors and a trumeau. To the left of the main front, there is a buttressed range with plate tracery, a fleche on the slate roof, an elaborate niche at the apex of the gable, and heraldic devices in the oculi. Attached to the right is a triple-gabled house in the Tudor style, featuring stone mullioned windows.

King's College, along with its walls and gate piers, forms a cohesive architectural group.
