Description
The cast iron triangular boundary post outside No 47 Shoreditch Road is a boundary marker from the late 19th century that was relocated in the mid-20th century. It has a triangular shape on a projecting plinth and features a sloping top, standing approximately 1 metre high. The post has inscribed lettering on both faces and the triangular top, with the left side reading "TTC" for Taunton Town Council and the right side "THB" for Taunton Highway Board. The angled head includes a small panel inscribed with the word "BOUNDARY."
Taunton Town Council was established by charter in 1877, and the Highway Boards ceased to exist in 1894. This boundary post was erected before 1889, as it appears on the Ordnance Survey map from that year, located about 0.5 km north of its current position. This post is an unusual survival of a cast-iron boundary marker, one of only two remaining in Taunton from the late 19th century, with the other listed as grade II on Honiton Road.
