Description
The School Cottage is a building that was originally a school and is now a dwelling. It was constructed in 1864 using squared and coursed local stone with Ham stone dressings and has slate roofs. There is a stone stack on the west gable end. The structure consists of a single-storey block on the left and a two-storey section adjoining to the west. The two-storey part has two bays, with the first floor featuring gabled tops above two-light leaded wooden casements that have semi-circular heads.
On the ground floor of the left block, there is a gabled single-storey porch that is accessed by a flight of four steps. This porch has a Tudor arch head doorway with a ribbed door. There is also a three-light Ham stone Tudor arch head mullioned window with incised spandrels and a hoodmould, which is similar to a window in the block to the right, where there is also a two-light wooden casement. The left return gable end has an inserted 20th-century window.
The school was funded by the Elton family, who were the lords of the manor. It closed in 1966 and was converted into a private dwelling in 1974.
