Description
Northay Farmhouse is a C16 farmhouse, with ceiled detailing from the C17, a north extension dating to the C18, and replacement windows from the C20. The farmhouse is constructed of random rubble local stone, with a thatched roof, corrugated sheeting on a north end bay, and a brick stack to the left of the entrance. Originally thought to have been an open hall house facing east, it was ceiled to form a two-cell and cross passage plan, with the hall later subdivided and two rooms added to the north of the kitchen. The two-story farmhouse has six bays, with a butt joint located between the third and fourth bays on the right side. It features 2-light casement windows, with two 2-light windows on the ground floor to the right of a wide entrance masked by a C20 glazed porch. There are two further casements to the right and a square-headed plank door. The interior contains four pairs of smoke blackened jointed cruck trusses at the south end, and four pairs of collar bead trusses to the north. A 6-panel compartment ceiling is present in the hall, cut at the southern end by an inserted partition. Additional interior features include a spice cupboard beside the chimney, a winder stair to the left of the entrance to a through passage, a later inserted straight stair within the passage, a blocked fireplace with a bread oven set against the rear wall to the north, and evidence of a former wattle and daub partition at the north end of the kitchen, potentially opening into a dairy.
