Description
Tithe Cottage is a semi-detached cottage located at the end of a row in Combe St Nicholas. It dates from the late medieval to the 16th century and was ceiled in the 19th century. The cottage was divided into two dwellings in the 19th century but restored to a single dwelling in the late 20th century. The exterior features roughcast over rubble, a double Roman tile roof, coped verges on the left gable end, and a roughcast stack on the left gable end, with brick to the right of the cross passage. The plan suggests it abuts a cottage to the east and was originally a single-ended open hall house, later modified into a three-cell layout with a cross passage.
The cottage has two storeys and is arranged in a 2:2 bay format, with all 20th-century 2- and 3-light casement windows. There is a 20th-century door in the second bay on the left, and gabled dormers rise from the eaves on the rear elevation. Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen to the cross passage, which is chamfered on both sides, along with a chamfered wooden lintel and chamfered stone jambs leading to the former kitchen. The base of a cruck blade is visible in the southeast corner of the out-shot, which is said to be separated from the former kitchen by a timber-framed partition. The west gable end reportedly shows a crud truss on the exterior. The upper storey is said to contain three jointed cruck trusses and one true cruck, all of different designs and thought to include reused timbers. This cottage was part of the globe.
