Description

The north and west boundary walls, along with the north-west gateway, to the Church of St. Catherine are mostly from the 19th century, although the gateway arch may date back to the 15th or 16th century. These structures are made from ham stone that has been cut and squared, featuring ashlar dressings. The walls vary in height from one to two metres and are topped with angled and roll-top coping, with a convex curved return leading to the gateway, which is positioned opposite the north porch of the church.

The gateway itself has an upstand with matching coping that frames a moulded three-centre arch adorned with quatrefoils and daggers in the spandrils. There are traces of an inscription on the two end pieces of the lintel that match those found in the chancel of the church, but new pieces have been added, making the text unreadable.

Wrought-iron memorial gates were installed in 1973. The west wall is constructed with smaller stones and features a plain double-angled coping, along with a simple gateway opposite the west door of the church. Overall, these structures provide an important setting for the Church and significantly contribute to the streetscape, as they are located on a prominent corner site.
