Description
No. 35, known as Montacute Gallery, and No. 36 are houses and a shop with origins dating back to the 18th century, though they have been modified. The buildings are constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings, and they feature a roof made of part Welsh slate and part asbestos cement slate, which continues at both ends. There is a stone slab chimney stack.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays. On the upper level, there are 3-light small-pane casements with timber lintels in bays 1 to 4, and a 2-light plain casement with a toplight in bay 5. The lower level features hollow-chamfered mullioned windows with 4 and 3 lights in bays 1 and 2, which are rectangular-leaded with iron-framed opening lights and lack labels. There is also another 2-light casement with a timber lintel in bay 5.
The shopfront is wide and has plain windows, a central recessed doorway, and a fascia that spans bays 3 and 4. To the right of bay 2, there is a chamfered cambered-arched doorway with a 20th-century door, accessed by one step. To the left of bay 5, there are two doorways: the left one is a boarded door leading to a through passage, and the right one is a part-glazed door into No. 35, both set in plain openings. The interiors have not been seen. These buildings are included primarily for their group value in an important vista leading to the Church of St. Catherine.
