Description
A row of five cottages dating from the early 19th century, located on the south side of East Street in Milborne Port. The cottages are built of local stone, squared and cut, with plain clay tiled roofs and simple gables. Brick chimney stacks are also present.
The cottages are two storeys high, with two bays per house. Number 38 projects slightly as a wide gable. Each cottage has 2-light leaded casement windows with iron frames, set within segmental arched openings constructed with voussoired stone. Boarded doors are found within matching arched openings separating the bays.
Number 36 has had alterations to its lean-to roof, and the original linking wall to number 35 has been removed, now featuring a modern small-pane casement. Number 37 has a lower-left window replaced with a steel casement, although the original window opening remains. Number 38 has 3-light windows and a boarded-up circular opening in the gable, with a later boarded front door. Number 39 appears to be largely unchanged. Number 40 has horizontal bar steel casements in the original window openings, a lean-to against the north gable, and a linking wall with a gate to number 41.
Alterations and additions have occurred to the rear of the cottages. The interiors have not been inspected. The central three cottages are very similar and retain a consistent character.
