Description
Mill Cottage is a 19th-century building that serves as both a mill and a mill house. It features stone ashlar construction and a double Roman clay tiled roof with stepped coped gables, including intermediate coping between the mill and the house, and a gabletted finial at the south end. The mill is three stories tall, while the house is two stories, both under the same roofline, and each unit consists of three bays.
The first bay of the mill has a segmental arched doorway leading to the wheelhouse. The second bay features a chamfered stone mullioned surround with a two-light window, and the third bay has a cambered arched doorway that is now blocked with window infill. The two upper floors have casement windows in the second and third bays. There is a straight joint between the first and second bays of the mill, and the mill house projects slightly. The mill house is symmetrical, with a plain recessed central doorway and a four-panel door, along with two-light casement windows that have horizontal glazing bars.
There is also a lower two-story extension to the north that matches the main building. The interior has not been seen. This building is significant in local history as a flax mill, and it has an overshot mill wheel that is currently cased, with its condition unknown as of August 1983.
