Description
Millbrook House is an early 19th-century house located on the north side of High Street in West Coker. It is constructed from ham stone that is cut and roughly squared, possibly originally rendered, and features ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate with a stone ridge between coped gables, and there are brick chimney stacks at each end.
The house is two storeys high and has a wide three-bay front, with a two-bay extension to the west. The plain sash windows have plain ashlar surrounds, and the central front door is framed by an architraved and beaded surround. A 20th-century Doric stone colonnaded porch is situated along the front, topped with a cornice and plain parapet. The extension includes two ground-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with small panes and labels above, and a 3-light window above them. At the rear, there is a further single-storey extension made of brick, featuring a fish-scale clay tile roof and French doors set in a single 4-centred arch. The interior has not been seen.
Millbrook House was built by Israel Rendell, who was the founder of the West of England Twine Works, prior to 1827.
