Description

The toll house, known as Turnpike Lodge, was built around 1850 and is constructed from local stone that is cut, squared, and coursed, with Ham stone dressings. It features a plain clay tiled roof adorned with fish-scale bands and has coped gables. The building has an asymmetric plan and is designed in a Tudor-Gothic style, consisting of one storey with an attic and two storeys. It includes mullioned windows with labels and cast iron lattice casements. The two bays are treated separately, with the left-hand side being lower. A 20th-century bay window on the ground floor has replaced the former entrance and bay window, with the entrance now located at the northeast. A two-storey return wing and a stepped chimney face Mudford Road. The interior has been significantly altered. The front boundary, which faces north and east, features a low stone wall with cast iron railings and gates, the latter topped with fleur-de-lys finials. This toll house is said to have replaced an earlier toll house closer to the town and served a dual purpose as a stockyard gate for a nearby brickworks. It was originally similar in design to Newton Street House (Newton Lodge, Yeovil). An early photograph of the building is held in a private collection.
