ST54NE BATH ROAD 662-1/2/3 (North side) Milepost, approx 160 metres east of Churchill Road corner

Milepost. Early C19. Cast-iron. Triangular on plan, 400mm across the back, with exposed faces about 310mm, about 1m high, with raked top. 2 applied side panels with concave rounded corners and raised lettering, reading on west face "Bath/19/Miles" and on east "Wells/1/Mile". This was the start of the Wells to Bath road, turnpiked by the Wells Trust (1753-1883) in 1753. In 1847 Mr John Kelway was successful in a tender for "Iron Mile Marks" at »1.10s.0d each for the Wells Trust, and this may be one of these.
