Description
This is a milepost located approximately 160 metres east of the corner of Churchill Road in Wells. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of cast iron. The milepost has a triangular shape, measuring 400 millimetres across the back and about 310 millimetres on the exposed faces, standing approximately 1 metre high with a raked top. It features two applied side panels with concave rounded corners and raised lettering. The west face reads "Bath/19/Miles" and the east face reads "Wells/1/Mile". This milepost marks the beginning of the road from Wells to Bath, which was turnpiked by the Wells Trust from 1753 to 1883. In 1847, Mr. John Kelway won a contract for "Iron Mile Marks" for the Wells Trust, and this milepost may be one of those.
