Description

The Old House is an early 18th-century detached house situated in Lower Ansford. It is constructed of roughly coursed Cary stone rubble, formerly rendered and with painted stone dressings. The roof is double Roman clay tile, with coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular five-bay facade. The upper floor has sash windows with eight panes, thick glazing bars, and moulded stone surrounds. The lower floor has 19th-century four-pane sashes in moulded timber surrounds; the windows in bays three, four, and five are out of alignment. A six-panelled door is located between bays two and three, set within a plain beaded surround and sheltered by a moulded stone anse-de-panier hood on simple brackets. The interior has not been inspected. An outhouse attached to the north gable has been converted into a separate house, "The Tallet," and is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
