Description
The Ansford War Memorial is a village memorial built around 1920 from limestone ashlar on a rubble stone base. The memorial is designed as an obelisk that rises from a panelled base, featuring a stepped plinth and a square platform. It is located against a grassed bank to the south of Tucker’s Lane.
On the north face of the obelisk, there is a high relief wreath of bay leaves bound with a ribbon. The tapered base has a central, recessed panel that displays an inscription in countersunk lead letters, which reads: ‘THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF ANSFORD / WHO DIED IN THE / SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on similarly shaped panels on the east and west sides of the base. The base is comprised of four steps, with the uppermost step made of ashlar and the lower steps made of rubble stone. The north face also includes the inscription ‘1939 - 1945’ along with the names of those who fell in the Second World War.
