Description
The Memorial Shell Casing in Baltonsborough is a Grade II listed structure unveiled in 1922 and donated by the National War Saving Committee. It consists of a 15-inch BL siege howitzer shell casing that stands on a millstone with a circular concrete base, which was originally a brick base. The shell features two plaques: a bronze plaque on the front inscribed with "PRESENTED BY THE NATIONAL WAR SAVINGS COMMITTEE TO THE PEOPLE OF BALTONSBOROUGH TO COMMEMORATE THEIR NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION DURING GUN WEEK, 1918," and a brass plaque that reads "ROLL OF HONOUR/ 1914 - 1918/ IN HONOURED REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ BALTONSBOROUGH/ WHO FOUGHT IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ ROYAL NAVY/ (NAMES)/ ARMY/ (NAMES AND RANK)," with the names of the fallen marked by a cross. In front of the memorial, there is a late 20th-century post and chain link fence and mid-20th-century metal gates, which are not included in the listing.
