Description

The Baltonsborough War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1922 by W H Snell & Sons, constructed from Portland stone. It features a tapering cross made of roughly-dressed stone, with axe-dressed edges on both the shaft and the cross arms. The memorial stands on a square plinth, which has an inscription on the front (north-east) face that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BALTONSBOROUGH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Below this inscription are the names of the fallen. The north-west face of the plinth lists the names of those who lost their lives during the Second World War. The plinth is supported by three octagonal steps, and surrounding it are eight flower holders made of Portland stone, which are believed to be part of the original design, although two of them were added in 1949. In front of the memorial, there is a post and chain link fence from the 1960s and a pair of Coronation gates from around 1981, which are not included in the listing.
