Description
The Burma War Memorial, located to the north of the Market House, commemorates the dead of Prince Albert's Somersetshire Light Infantry from the Third Burmese War of 1885-86-87. This memorial features an ashlar Celtic cross with a tapering shaft, which stands on a plinth consisting of three high steps. The cross and shaft are adorned with decorative Celtic details, primarily interlace patterns and some foliage panels on the south side. The names of significant battle honours, including Egypt, Burmah, Azim Curh, and Jellalabad, are carved in thick letters near the base, with full battle losses provided in inset lead letters. The memorial was relocated to its current position in 1996. It is part of an important group with nearby listed buildings, including No 1A Billet Street, No 66, the County Hotel, the Brendon Bar, and No "8" East Street, as well as those in Cheapside and Fore Street.
