Description
The Sampford Arundel War Memorial is a First World War memorial that dates from 1921, with an inscription added for the Second World War. It is made of granite and features a three-stepped base topped by a tapering shaft and a simple, tapered Latin cross. The front (north) face of the upper step has the inscription in raised lettering: "TO THE HONOURED / MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / THEIR COUNTRY 1914-18." The other faces bear the inscription: "IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO CAME TO THEIR COUNTRY’S AID 1914-1918." The names of the servicemen are listed on both the upper and middle steps, with the front face of the upper step commemorating the six men who lost their lives. The front face of the lowest step is inscribed: "1939 (NAME) 1945 / RIP."
