Description
This is a milestone located in Sampford Arundel, dating from the early 19th century. The milestone features a square plaque with a central semi-circular head, made of cast iron and concrete. It is inscribed in raised lettering with the words "Wiveliscombe 6 miles" and is set in a semi-circular headed post that stands about 600 millimeters high. The road connecting Wiveliscombe and Whiteball was turnpiked in 1786, as noted in Bentley and Murless's work on Somerset Roads from 1985. The plaque was reset in a new post in the mid-20th century.
