Description

Perry Elm is a farmhouse dating from the 16th to 17th century, with a mid-18th century brick facade and a rear wing that was either added or rebuilt. The building features red brick in Flemish bond on the facade, roughcast on the right return, and an asbestos slate roof on the wing, which has a gablet rising above the main roof on the right. The farmhouse has roughcast stacks on the right gable end and at the rear of the wing, with a large roughcast section to the left of the cross passage. It is designed in an L-plan, consisting of two cells and a cross passage, with a domestic and agricultural wing at the rear. The structure is two storeys high and has a 2:3 bay arrangement. The windows are in a 19th-century cruciform style, and the entrance is located in the third bay on the right, featuring a half-glazed early 20th-century door and a flat-roofed cantilever porch supported by shaped brackets, with a terracotta panel above that is imperfectly sighted. On the right return, there is a small 20th-century glazed opening next to the stack, likely a former stair light, and a plank door at the junction. The adjoining two-bay wing has late 18th to early 19th century two-light leaded iron casements on the first floor, flanking a Norwich Union fire mark, while the ground floor has an unglazed octagonal mullioned light under a wooden lintel, with a netted opening to the right, also under a wooden lintel. The gable end features a slobbered rubble addition. The interior has not been seen but may contain features of interest. The Day and Masters Map of Somerset from 1782 shows Perry Elm as a country house.
