Description

White's Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located in Sampford Arundel. The lower end of the building was rebuilt or extended later, and it was enlarged and had its windows changed in the late 18th to early 19th century, with further enlargement in the 20th century. The exterior is rendered, possibly over cob, with a slobbered rubble addition on the left, all under a hipped thatched roof. The eaves level rises at the end bay on the right, which has a projection on the facade at the junction. There is a hipped roof on the right side, and a stone stack that has been rebuilt in brick in the second bay on the left, along with a brick stack rising from the eaves on the right.

The farmhouse is L-shaped, consisting of three cells and a cross passage, with a wing at the rear. It has two storeys and features three bays on the left and one bay on the right. Most windows are 3 and 4-light leaded iron casements, except for a wooden 3-light casement on the first floor to the left. The ground floor on the left has an additional boarded opening, and there is a 20th-century door with a thatched hood porch in the second bay on the right. The rear has mostly 20th-century windows.

Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain three pairs of jointed cruck trusses in the left three bays. There is evidence that the cross passage has been removed, and the former screen had staggered wooden panels. The interior features chamfered beams with pyramid stops and a chamfered wooden lintel above the fireplace in the hall, which includes a winding stair. The upper end room has scroll stops. The building may have originally been a two-cell house that was enlarged, or it could have been a three-cell house with the lower end rebuilt.
