Description
The gatepiers and gates at the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Cross were built in 1897 by Ford Brothers and Co of Wellington. They are made of cast and wrought iron. The three gatepiers are hollow cast iron, topped with pyramids and featuring a moulded cornice. Each gatepier has a square plan with a recessed pointed arch panel above a rectangular recessed panel. The main gates are large wrought iron with decorative cresting and include an attached iron plaque that reads, "These gates were given by the Parishoners in commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria June 20th AD 1897." To the right, there is a pedestrian gate of similar design. Both the base of the central gatepiers and the lock plate of the main gate are inscribed with the name of the iron founders, Ford Brothers of Wellington, in raised lettering.
