Description
The Clapton War Memorial is a stone cross built in the 1920s. It features a rectangular base with a sloping plinth. The square shaft is topped with a plain Latin cross. On the front (west) face of the plinth, there is a copper plaque that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 KILLED IN ACTION (NAMES) THESE RETURNED (NAMES)." Below this plaque is another copper plaque inscribed with "1939 - 1945 KILLED IN ACTION (NAME) THESE RETURNED (NAMES)." The base and plinth are coarsely dressed stone, while the shaft and cross are made of ashlar.
