Description
The former tithe barn at Cumhill Farm, now disused, dates from the 14th to 15th century and was associated with Glastonbury Abbey. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with coped verges and finials, though the roof is missing. The barn has a rectangular plan, with the north elevation being slightly more detailed than the south. Each long side features a projecting gabled carriageway entrance at the center, with broad moulded pointed arch openings. The carriageway on the north side has angle buttresses, while the south side has flanking buttresses. Both elevations are supported by eight additional two-stage buttresses, with breathers between each, and the north side includes cruciform breathers. Each end elevation has a central three-stage buttress flanked by two-stage buttresses, again with breathers between, and one cruciform breather on each gable face. All gable faces have a single freestone panel with a carved Evangelistic symbol, with the end elevations featuring a cusped two-light opening above and the carriageways topped with a quatre-foil. The interior is virtually featureless. The barn is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 14).
