Description
The group of cottages at 55 to 67 Lower Keyford, represents the remains of a medieval manor house associated with the Twynhoe family, though now significantly altered. Numbers 59 and 61 are constructed of rendered rubble with pantile roofs, featuring irregularly placed windows, mostly wooden casements. The front of number 61 displays a blocked two-light medieval window with a stone mullion and trefoiled heads to the lights. A similar two-light window with arched heads and panelled spandrels is located to the rear. A two-light stone mullioned window with a flat head is present on the ground floor. Numbers 63 to 67 are built of rubble with block dressings and slate roofs, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, and have four sash windows and stone bay windows on the ground floor. Number 69 incorporates a lower, one-and-a-half storey extension projecting to the right, with steps leading to a door set in the gable end. Numbers 55 and 57 form a rear wing to numbers 59 and 61, dating from the altered 17th century and incorporating older fabric. Features include a pantile roof, a left-hand gable with a two-light attic window featuring an oak mullion and chamfered surround, a dormer to the right, and two modern casement windows. The interior of numbers 59 and 61 includes two winder staircases and two large fireplaces. Number 59’s fireplace has a wood lintel and moulded stone sides. A stop-chamfered surround is visible on the ground floor communicating door between numbers 59 and 61. The buildings are listed for their historical and architectural interest.
