Description
50 Lower Keyford is a late 17th-century cottage that stands at 1½ storeys with two gables, built from local rubble. It is an excellent example of vernacular architecture in the area. The left gable features a pair of glazing sashes on the first floor, while the right gable has a glazing sash on the ground floor and a blocked window on the second floor. The windows have wooden lintels. The central door is framed by a double ogee stopped surround and features a studied original door. At the rear, there are two gables with two-light glazing bar sash windows, and the left gable has an ovolo moulded wood surround. There is also a studied back door.
Inside, the cottage has a through-passage with three doors, all featuring stopped ovolo surrounds. The ground floor room to the north includes a very large fireplace with a high ovolo moulded chimney piece above, and there is a carved stop on the axial beam chamfer. A winder stair is positioned against the stack, leading to the first floor, with an incised surround to the doorway and large rustic turned balusters on the landing. The central doorway on the first floor also has a stopped ovolo surround.
